Winston-Salem, NC Dulcimer Club
This group meets the first Tuesday night of each month at 6:30 pm. We are a diverse gathering of folks from all across the community who gather to encourage and support each other in our exploration of the lap (or mountain) dulcimer. Our skill level varies widely and we try to make sure everyone is welcome at whatever your playing level. We meet at the Brookridge Retirement Center which is off Bethabara between University and North Point (or Silas Creek). For more detailed location, follow this link map. This is a gated community so when you come to the gate, simply tell them you are here for the dulcimer club and they will let you in. Follow the road until it ends at a parking lot for the main building. Our meeting room is just behind the stairway to the dining room.

This time to meet is an opportunity for us to play tunes together. We play in D-A-A tuning one month and D-A-D tuning the next month.

John C.Campbell Folk School

This is a charming school in far southwest North Carolina. It is as fun for me to teach there as it is for any of the students. They offer a wide variety of traditional and contemporary classes as well as many music classes. The classes that I currently have scheduled are

July 26-31, 2009- Dulcimer Celebration - A week for adv. Beginner and up for both lap and hammered dulcimer. Featuring a staff of four with a wide range of experience, you will have an immense amount of fun and be challenged to move to new playing levels.

August 17-23  2008 & February 8-14, 2009, Hammered Dulcimer Building - In this class we will be building a 15/15 Hammered dulcimer with a Mahogany top. It will be a performance quality instrument.

Elderhostels
I teach several Elderhostel classes each year. Elderhostel is a tremendous worldwide teaching enterprise that offers classes in a wide array of subject area. Elderhostel limits registration to folks who are 55 years or older. The courses that I teach are either building classes where we construct an instrument from materials that I provide or a playing class where I teach specific skills for playing the hammered or lap dulcimers. In the building classes, when a couple registers together, the cost of all of the necessary materials to build one instrument is included in the fee. If an individual registers, there is an extra materials fee to help cover the instrument costs.

All of these take place at the Southwest Virginia 4-H Center in Abingdon, Virginia. This is a comfortable, modern retreat center. The conference center has air-conditioned rooms with private baths. We have a nice large workroom for the construction process. Meals are also all provided as well as frequent snacks.

The classes I have scheduled for 2008 are

March 29 - April 4, Dulcimer Discoveries -Adv. Beg Playing Skills LD or HD with Jeff Sebens - This class will help you advance your skills on either lap dulcimer or hammered dulcimer. If you know a few tunes and are ready to learn more, this class is for you. This class will also be open to non elderhostel registrants (SWVA 4-H Center)

May 4-10 2008, Mandolin Building - In this class we will work from a kit of materials to build an A-style mandolin. Most of the hard parts are completed, but we will voice the top and back plates and assemble the components for optimum performance. ( Material fee of $125)

To register, call Elderhostel toll free at (877) 426-8056 or visit their web site at http://www.elderhostel.org/ . The classes that I teach can be found in the catalogs general listings under Virginia / SWVA 4-H Center or under the applied arts and crafts heading again under Virginia / SWVA 4-H Center

You can also look at the web site for the 4-H Center. Click on Program, then Elderhostel SWVA 4-H Center

Jacksonville Center, Floyd, VA

The Jacksonville Center for the Arts offers a wide variety of arts & cultural activities for visitors and community members, including contemporary & folk art exhibits, educational programs for kids & adults, and social events throughout the year.

The Jacksonville Center's class schedule offers over 50 classes for 2006. The center has three fully functional studios for pottery, blacksmithing, and glass-working. Lodging is available in an on-site dormitory for our visiting students.

August 4-8, 2008- Lap Dulcimer Building - In this week, I will provide you with a kit of materials and we will construct a solid wood, lap dulcimer. Even folks with no woodworking experience can go home with an heirloom quality instrument. I will also teach you the basics of how to play while we are building your instrument.
